The Jim Pattison Group of Vancouver and Sun Media launched a new free daily publication for the Vancouver market today called 24 Hours. The publication will be distributed five days a week through boxes in the Lower Mainland region, through newspaper vendors and in some retail outlets. It will carry local, national and international news, plus sports, fashion, business and entertainment coverage in a compact format designed to appeal to active people who only have a few minutes to read. Sun Media also produced editions of 24 Hours in Toronto and Montreal. Glen Clark has been appointed president of 24 Hours Vancouver. The publisher is Mike Cowan, formerly of the Globe and Mail. Dean Broughton, formerly editor of the Richmond News, has been hired as editor-in-chief. The publication will be produced locally and printed in colour by Quebecor World in Vancouver. "The 24 Hours concept has been extremely popular in Montreal and Toronto," said Pierre Francoeur, president of Sun Media. "We have found that readers really want quick-read daily newspapers that tell them what's happening without forcing them to spend hours wading through news that's less important. The unique format of this daily news magazine has drawn the attention of the newspaper industry since its inception in 2004 and we have little doubt that it will be a hit with readers in the Lower Mainland."
