BODY SHOP INTERNATIONAL BUYS CANADIAN OPERATION

U.K.-based The Body Shop International has purchased the business and assets of Toronto-based The Body Shop Canada for $26 million in cash and stock. The Canadian arm of the toiletries and cosmetics company had been owned by Margot Franssen, Quig Tingley and Betty-Ann Franssen since 1980. Business will continue as is at the chain's 111 stores and the company will retain its head office in Toronto. The Canadian locations will become part of The Body Shop International's Americas region, which is overseen by Americas president Joanne Calabrese. Laine Ferguson, previously executive vice-president of retail for The Body Shop Canada, has joined the Americas staff as executive vice-president of Canada operations. She will manage the day-to-day business in Canada.
