MOHAWK CONNECTS WITH PHONE CARDS
By Adnews Staff
Mohawk Oil Co. of Burnaby, B.C. is selling prepaid phone cards at the Stop 'n Shop convenience stores attached to its gas stations. The company launched a series of 12 phone cards in Western Canada earlier this month, which bear the logos of four National Hockey League teams: Los Angeles Kings, Montreal Canadiens, Anaheim Mighty Ducks and Toronto Maple Leafs. When baseball season starts Mohawk will sell a set of cards featuring Major League teams. In the future there will also be a Sesame Street set. When card users dial long distance they will hear Mohawk phone commercials promoting special offers or new service station locations. The NHL cards are being promoted with point-of-purchase materials created by Palmer Jarvis Advertising of Vancouver. The cards are made by GTS Canada of Winnipeg, which opened its doors late last year. "We believe that GTS has a significant opportunity to quickly gain market share through retail distribution from convenience stores, gas stations, supermarkets and other similar retail establishments," says GTS Canada president Joe Clark, in a release. Last August the 7-Eleven convenience store chain launched its own brand of long distance prepaid phone cards in Canada, offering up to 50% discounts on calls to 200 countries.
