FEMALE DRUG MARKET GROWING

The U.S. market for drugs treating female-specific diseases and conditions will grow at an annual rate of 13.3% right up to the year 2000, according to a survey by FIND/SVP of New York. Pharmaceutical sales in the category at that time will be over $10.6 billion(US). Much of the growth is due to the the increasing number of baby boomers, aged 45 to 54, falling victim to female cancers. They are also creating a growing market for menopausal drugs and cardiovascular drugs because heart disease in women is a menopausal disease. The number of women aged 45 to 54 is expected to grow nearly 70% from 1990 to 2010, according to Census Bureau projections. The percentage of women aged 18 to 24 using oral contraceptives is growing. Infertility treatment is expanding at an annual rate of 16.6%. According to FIND/SVP, there are over 300 drugs currently under development for female specific diseases and conditions.
