SOUTHAM LOSES $53.4 MILLION

Toronto-based Southam Inc. lost $53.4 million in 1995, compared with a profit of $44 million in 1994. The company had operating profits at both its newspaper and business communications divisions. However, a $120-million charge, related to eliminating about 700 newspaper jobs over the next three years and writing down some asset values, left the company in the red. By increasing its circulation charges and advertising rates, Southam boosted newspaper revenues 5% to $846 million even though ad linage was down 2.8%. Operating income declined 6.6% to $68.8 million. The business communications division enjoyed a record profit of $15.6 million, up 8% from 1994. Revnue rose 6% to $176 million.
