NEW TRANSIT MEDIA

Autobyte Technologies of Montreal has developed an electronic display unit that can carry advertising inside city buses. Called ViDCELL, the unit is placed on top of a panel behind the driver. The upper third of the screen indicates the next bus stop coming up, and which connecting routes are at the stop. The rest is used for advertising. Autobyte is hoping to begin selling the units to North American cities within the next two months. ViDCELL would have a captive audience. The company says a New York City study done by McGill University's Business Consulting Group found that bus riders travelled an average of 30 minutes both morning an evening. ViDCELL says the units are more entertaining than posters and are less subject to vandalism.
