UPDATE: CANADIAN GRAND PRIX CANCELLED
By Adnews Staff
The Canadian Grand Prix for 2004 has been cancelled, according to media reports. Bernie Ecclestone of Formula One confirmed the cancellation yesterday. Last week Normand Legault, chairman and CEO of Grand Prix F1 of Canada, said he received a letter from Formula One officials stating that the 2004 event would be cancelled due to the Canadian government's ban on tobacco advertising, which comes into effect later this year. At that time Ecclestone denied the Montreal race had been cancelled. In media reports late last week, Ecclestone confirmed a letter had been sent, and said a contract provision allows for the race not to be included on the calendar for the relevant year if the tobacco advertising ban becomes effective.
