GOODYEAR CANADA BEGINS WEST NILE INITIATIVE

Toronto-based tire maker Goodyear Canada has created a program intended to reduce mosquito populations. Groups of workers called "Skeeter Beaters" will visit Toronto homes for the next several weeks to drill drainage holes in backyard tire swings. The holes will prevent pools of standing water from collecting. Such pools attract mosquitoes which can carry the West Nile virus. The groups will also distribute pamphlets on the West Nile virus. Homeowners interested in the servie can book an appointment by telephone, email or Web site. The program will run from May 24 to June 8. The "Skeeter Beater" initiative is being promoted with public relations from Environics Communications of Toronto.
