DOMESTIC VIOLENCE CAMPAIGN REJECTED BY TELEVISION BUREAU

A television public awareness campaign about domestic violence from The HomeFront Society of Calgary will not air due to an unfavourable ruling from the Television Bureau of Canada. The two commercials, created pro bono by Ogilvy & Mather of Calgary, depicted domestic violence situations in public places, the first in a restaurant and the second a boardroom. The tagline was "You wouldn't get away with it here. You shouldn't get away with it at home." The ads were originally scheduled to break in mid-April. They were pushed to mid-May before being rejected by the bureau, which deemed them too graphic. The HomeFront Society's communications officer Kevin McNichol said the organization is unsure how to discuss domestic violence without the use of imagery. According to McNichol, the creative strategy of the campaign will be revised. The group hopes to have a modified campaign ready to air in November to coincide with Turn Off the Violence week.
