GREYHOUND TO GO AHEAD WITH AIRLINE

Calgary-based Greyhound Lines of Canada is launching an airline in the second quarter of the year with six jets operated by Kelowna Flightcraft Air Charter. Greyhound Air will be based in Winnipeg. The company will offer two flights daily linking Vancouver, Kelowna, B.C., Calgary, Edmonton, Winnipeg, Ottawa, Toronto and Hamilton, Ont. Advertising for the airline will be done by Palmer Jarvis Advertising of Vancouver. Greyhound's owner, Dial Corp. of Phoenix, Arizona, is planning a restructuring that would see Greyhound's intercity bus business spun off as a separate company owned 76% by public shareholders. Dial currently owns 68.5% of Greyhound. Under the restructuring it would become 100% owner of Greyhound's hotel, sightseeing and tourism business. The proposal has been delayed because of potential financial and tax problems. A group of Calgary investors will be in the air before Greyhound. They have started a Calgary-based discount carrier called WestJet Airlines, which is scheduled to take off Feb. 29. Westjet will link Winnipeg, Edmonton, Calgary, Kelowna, Victoria and Vancouver.
