McDONALD'S SCRAPS LOW-FAT BURGER
By Adnews Staff
McDonald's Restaurants low-fat burger, the McLean Deluxe, is biting the dust - apparently because that's how its tastes. The U.S. chain announced this week that it is taking the hamburger off the menu; the Canadian operation is to make an announcement in the next few days. Sales have been slow for the McLean Deluxe, introduced five years ago as a low-fat version of the Quarter Pounder. McDonald's substituted carrageenan, a seaweed derivative, for the fat that binds beef together. Many customers complained that this made the burger taste dry. The McLean contains 330 calories, and 12 grams of fat compared to 420 calories and twice the amount of fat for the Quarter Pounder.
