ONE STANDARD FOR INTERNET CREDIT CARD PURCHASES

MasterCard International and Visa International have agreed on a technical standard to bring security to purchases made over the Internet, called Secure Electronic Transactions. Participants include International Business Machines Corp., Microsoft Corp., Netscape Communications and GTE Corp. Using SET, people can send a credit card number to a merchant in a scrambled or encrypted form that can't be understood by thieves.
