ONE STANDARD FOR INTERNET CREDIT CARD PURCHASES
By Adnews Staff
MasterCard International and Visa International have agreed on a technical standard to bring security to purchases made over the Internet, called Secure Electronic Transactions. Previously Visa and MasterCard had conflicting security specifications, making banks and merchants leery of adopting either standard. SET will be tested in the second quarter of the year. Participants include International Business Machines Corp., Microsoft Corp., Netscape Communications and GTE Corp. Using SET, people can send a credit card number to a merchant in a scrambled or encrypted form that can't be understood by thieves.
