AMAZON LAUNCHES CANADIAN SITE

Online retailer Amazon.com has opened a Canadian Web site called Amazon.ca. The site lists approximately 1.5 million books, CDs, videos and DVDs in English and French with prices are in Canadian dollars. Shipping from within Canada will be done by Canada Post. Fulfillment services will be handled by Assured Logistics. Amazon is based in Seattle, WA. The company does not plan to open a Canadian office. The site will be promoted with print advertising in newspaper and magazines, online advertising on Yahoo.ca, Canoe.ca, MSN.ca and AOL.ca and sponsorships of local and national events. The site will also be promoted through the retailer's Associates Program, through which Web site owners receive commissions for sales generated by visitors referred to Amazon.ca through links on their sites. Weiden & Kennedy is Amazon's global agency of record. In Canada, Grey Interactive will will be used by the retailer for promotions and online initiatives. Public relations will be handled by GCI Group.
