CRTC OKAYS TWO NEW ONTARIO STATIONS
By Adnews Staff
The Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission has approved applications from Craig Broadcasting Systems Inc. and Rogers Broadcasting Ltd. for two new television stations in Ontario. Craig's licence is for an English-language station called "Toronto One" which will reach Toronto and Hamilton, ON. The station will broadcast 14.5 hours of local programming per week, including a local variety show each weekday evening and a weekly 30-minute Aboriginal newsmagazine program. Rogers' application is for an ethnic station in Toronto called "CFMT Too". As part of the partial approval granted to Rogers, the new station can begin operating when Rogers receives approval for a channel other than the one for which it originally applied. Its application was for the frequency granted to Craig Broadcasting. "CFMT Too" will offer programming for Asian and African communities. Rogers' existing channel CFMT-TV will shift to programming for the European, Latin American and the Caribbean communities. In addition to Craig and Rogers, the CRTC received applications from TDNG Inc., Global Communications and Alliance Atlantis Broadcasting.
