SALES OF COLD REMEDIES ON THE DECLINE
By Adnews Staff
Canadians are either getting fewer colds or switching remedies, according to numbers from A.C. Nielsen of Markham, Ont. Sales are down for non-prescription cold remedies, according to the research firm's count. The facial tissues market grew 6% but that was largely due to price increases. Sales of chicken noodle soup showed a 3% growth, while those of cold and sinus tablets and capsules grew 1%. The biggest drop was in non-prescription cough syrups and throat lozenges; each lost 4% of market share. Headache remedies saw a 3% decrease and nasal decongestants had a 2% drop. Overall, Canadians still spent $645.5 million in six cold remedy categories.
