TWO DOWN, TWO TO GO FOR CONSUMERS

Consumers Gas has half the job done. The Toronto-based company hired agencies last week for two of its four accounts. Weaver, Tanner & Miller of Kitchener, Ont. will be handling the utility account while its Toronto subsidiary, WT&M Direct, will work on the direct mail business. Agencies for Consumers' retail and media accounts will be chosen in the next two weeks. WT&M won the utility assignment in a competition with three other agencies. "We feel they have the expertise and strategic counsel to assist us," marketing communications manager Connie Turner told Adnews yesterday. WT&M Direct won its assignment because "we felt the backgound and experience of the person heading up the team was excellent," said Turner. "There was a comfort level that we wouldn't get lost in the shuffle, and we were comfortable with their familiarity with complex data bases." Consumers put its account up for grabs late last year after it decided to divide its business into four accounts. The gas company has been with United Business Communications for a year and a half. The total advertising budget is $3 million. The four accounts will be reviewed annually and the company will also hire agencies for other projects as they come up.
