TORSTAR LOOKS TO LAUNCH TRIO OF TV STATIONS
By Adnews Staff
Torstar Corporation has applied to federal regulators for three broadcasting licences for the Southern Ontario market, according to a report in The Globe and Mail. The publishing company wants to operate stations in the Toronto, Hamilton and Kitchener markets. David Galloway, Torstar's president and CEO, did not disclose specific details in the report except that the stations would be tied to the company's newspaper chain. Torstar's newspapers include The Toronto Star, The Kitchener-Waterloo Record and The Hamilton Spectator. As a result of Torstar's application, the Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission has issued a call for applications for one or all three cities. If new licences are granted, the stations may not begin broadcasting until as late as 2003, the report said.
