NEW PUBLISHER FOR INFLIGHT BOOK

Canadian will be back to a monthly frequency in January. The inflight magazine of Canadian Airlines International will also have a new look and, beginning later in the spring, will be accompanied by an electronic version. These are just a couple of the plans being developed for the magazine by a new publisher. The Calgary-based airline has signed a three-year contract with Transcontinental Publications Inc., a division of Montreal-based Transcontinental Group GTC. There are plans for Japanese and Chinese versions of the book and the airline says it is looking at other ways to develop "innovative infight entertainment." It is aiming for a March launch of an inflight video magazine which will sell advertising and sponsorships. Tim Goodman is spending a good deal of his time on the new venture, for Transcontinental. Last March Goodman walked away from his senior vice-president position with Telemedia Publishing to start his own company, Customer Insight Ltd. He said he wanted to apply his knowledge of publications to new marketing techniques in the electronic age. Canadian has been published in-house, on a bimonthly frequency, since last June. The airline was obliged to start looking for another publisher after Synergism Marketing & Communications of Toronto declared bankruptcy. Synergism had Inside Guide Magazine Company Ltd. of Toronto publishing Canadian.
