CRTC RENEWS YTV LICENCE, AMENDS PROGRAMMING CONDITION

Toronto-based youth network YTV has had its licence renewed for another seven years by the Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission. In addition, the station has had one of its programming conditions amended. The condition required YTV to include a protagonist under the age of 18 in all drama programs broadcast between the hours of 6 p.m. and midnight. Sally Tindal, YTV spokesperson, said the network requested the amendment because researched showed the station's core audience of 6-11 year olds were generally going to bed at about 9 p.m. The amendment now lets YTV develop new programming geared to a slightly older teen audience as well as to family viewers. Tindal said the change in programming following the amendment will be seen when the new season launches this Fall.
