H-P SCANNER COULD REPLACE COPIERS
By Adnews Staff
A new scanner from U.S.-based Hewlett-Packard Co. could mean bad news for copiers. The company put a scanner on the North American market this week called the ScanJet 4Si, which hooks into a computer network to scan up to 50 documents at one time into several PCs. The scanned documents can then be printed out or shipped to other PC users via fax or e-mail. California-based market research firm Dataquest estimates that U.S. shipments of copiers will peak in 1997 at about 1.8 million, but will then gradually decline. The scanner market, on the other hand, could climb sharply to five million shipments worldwide in 1997 from 2.7 million this year. In addition, H-P put two other scanners on the North American market this week, called the ScanJet 4C and 4S. In Canada there is no product specific advertising for the new scanners but a print and point-of-purchase campaign for H-P's imaging products will be launched next year. It will be created by Saatchi & Saatchi Advertising of Toronto.
