ONLINE ADVERTISING ON THE RISE

According to a new survey by Ernst & Young Consulting Services Inc. of Toronto, a increase in Web advertising revenue is to be expected for 1999. The semi-annual survey was done on behalf of the IAB Internet Advertising Bureau, a national organization for marketing and advertising on the Internet. Key findings of the survey revealed ad revenues in 1998 ammounted to $24.5 million. This year revenues are predicted to be $55.5 million, rising to $109 million in 2000. This year the top five industries buying ads are financial services, retailing, computing products, consumer services and communications. Retailing is expected assume the number one position in 2000. Banners continue to be the most popular advertising format, accounting for 70 percent of all ad revenue. Sponsorship revenue is expected to make up 24 percent, up 14 percent from last year. Revenue for French sites is projected to be $7 million this year and $16.5 million in 2000.
