CRTC APPROVES CHANGES TO LOCAL TELEPHONE RATES

A proposal submitted by BCT.TELUS of Burnaby, B.C., which will soon operate nationally under the TELUS brand name, has been approved by the Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission. The proposal was asking for changes to local residential and business telephone rates. In British Columbia, three per cent of residential customers will see an increase of $1 per month. For business customers, the change is a decrease of $1.30 for a single business line. In Alberta, residential customers on rotary dial telephones will see a rate increase of ten percent to $17.38 a month. Residential customers on touch tone services will see an increase of 8.4 percent to $19.90 per month. According to TELUS, the rate changes help align Edmonton customers with the rest of Alberta. Business customers in Edmonton, Calgary, Fort McMurray, Grande Prairie, Lethbridge, Lloydminster, Medicine Hat, Red Deer, Sherwook Park and St. Albert will receive a price reduction of up to 30 per cent. TELUS will inform customers of the new rates through a direct mail campaign created in-house by TELUS. The new rates are effective today.
