TELEMARKETING SCAMS FOCUS OF NEW CAMPAIGN

Sponsored by the joint government/private sector Deceptive Telemarketing Prevention Forum, a new public education campaign is attempting to help consumers avoid becoming victims of telephone fraud. The national "Stop Phone Fraud... It's a Trap" campaign includes posters, pamphlets, television public service announcements, a website and educational materials, all designed to help consumers tell the difference between an honest telemarketer and a scam artist. According to the Forum, the materials are targeted at seniors because they are particularly vulnerable to this type of crime. Members of the Forum include Canada Post, Visa, MasterCard, the Canadian Association of Retired Persons and the Canadian Marketing Association. The campaign launched today and was created by GPC Communications of Ottawa.
