HERITAGE MINISTER BANS CANADIAN COMPANIES FROM U.S. MAGS

Heritage Minister Sheila Copps has introduced a bill that would prohibit foreign publishers from selling ad space to Canadian companies or individuals trying to market their products and services in Canada. Magazines violating the law would be fined $250,000. In addition, the minister would appoint a person to investigate whether a foreign publisher has breached the rules. The bill was introduced to stop U.S. publishers from setting up Canadian editions of their magazines and taking ad revenues from Canadian pubications. The U.S. publications carry mainly U.S. content, but carry Canadian advertising.
