CANWEST LOOKS TO NEGOTIATE DEAL FOR SPECIALTY CHANNELS

Now that CanWest Global Communications Corp. of Winnipeg is a national broadcaster, it wants to expand its presence in the specialty channel market. The company has made a bid to buy NetStar Communications Inc. in a deal expected to exceed $900 million. The deal would give CanWest three of Canada's specialty channels: The Sports Network, The Discovery Channel and the French-language Reseau Des Sports. CanWest already owns a specialty channel called Prime TV. Earlier this month, CanWest bought some of the television assets of WIC Western International Communications of Vancouver, giving CanWest a national presence.
