SMALL FRY BUYS QUEBEC SNACK FOOD MAKER

Small Fry Snack Foods Ltd. of Kitchener, Ont. is getting bigger. The company has bought Quebec-based Krack-O-Pop Inc. for $3.5 million. Krack-O-Pop markets corn-based snack foods under its own name, as well as under private labels. Its products are sold mainly through mass merchandisers such as Zellers, Wal Mart and Kmart stores. Small Fry markets snacks under private label, as well as under its own brand names which include: Humpty Dumpty, Extreme, New Waves, Doodles, Mexitos and Party Mix. Small Fry chairman and CEO Gerald Schmalz told Adnews yesterday that the company plans to keep Krack-O-Pop operating under its own division at least for the next year, then Small Fry will re-evaluate the set up. Advertising for Small Fry is done by Black Rock Marketing of Toronto. Krack-o-Pop doesn't promote its products through advertising.
