AUSTRALIA PRINT MEDIA TO FACE FINES FOR TOBACCO PICTURES

Australia's state health department has warned print media that they will be fined up to $30,000 if they publish photographs of grand prix racing cars showing tobacco company logos. So far, TV stations have escaped warnings because they come under federal laws regulating the electronic media, but the federal health department supports the fines. Australia's federal government has an almost complete ban on tobacco advertising, but will grant exceptions to events "deemed to be of international significance" and would be lost to Australia if an exemption wasn't made. These events would include grand prix racing and the Australian Ladies Masters Golf championship.
