OUTDOOR SPENDING ON THE RISE

Outdoor advertising is gaining popularity in the U.S., according to the Outdoor Advertising Association of America. The organization has reported that spending on outdoor ads climbed 8.8% last year to $2.135 billion(US), making 1997 its fifth consecutive year of growth. Hollywood studios helped propel the growth, with the entertainment and amusement category leading the way in spending. This category saw a 24.6% jump in spending to $208.5 million. Revenues in the business and consumer services category increased 17.7% to $160.8 million, making it the medium's new No. 2 category. The tobacco products category dropped to the No. 3 spot, with spending slipping 1.7% to $155.9 million.
