TOKYO PUTS THE BRAKES ON TRANSIT CIGARETTE ADS

The Tokyo Metropolitan Government banned cigarette advertising this week from subways, buses and streetcars in the city. The government had already ruled that advertising cigarettes on TV will no longer be allowed beginning in April. Fearing that this would mean tobacco companies would increase other forms of advertising, the government decided to ban cigarette ads on Tokyo's public transportation system. The ad ban will be phased in, allowing existing contracts to be filled. Once the contract is expired, it will not be renewed.
