CHAPTERS LOOKING FOR ORIGINAL COLES NOTES
By Adnews Staff
Toronto-based Chapters Inc. is sending consumers into the back of their closets, under their beds and in their basements to search for the first-ever Coles Notes. The book retailer launched a contest this week celebrating the 50th anniversary of Coles Notes, offering contestants a chance to win $5,000. Under the contest rules, participants must fax or mail photocopies of the front and back covers, as well as the inside title page of the book, along with their name, address and phone number. The deadline for entries is Feb. 27. The first Coles Notes title was the English translation of Colomba, a French novella by Prosper Merimee which was on Ontario's Grade 13 curriculum in 1948. The original was not known as Coles Notes. Chapters believes the book was called Scholastic Translations. The contest is being promoted using media relations and in-store flyers created in-house. The Coles Notes line of books is a study aid for students.
