COMPAQ LEADS THE PACK IN CANADIAN COMPUTER SALES

Compaq Canada of Richmond Hill, Ont. has zipped past IBM Canada of Markham, Ont. in market share, according to figures from International Data Corp. The computer maker grabbed a 16.6% share of the market in 1997. IBM came in second with a 15.8% share. Dell Canada came in third with a 7.5% share, followed by Apple Canada with a 5% share. Compaq is the leader in sales of servers and desktops, but Toshiba Canada and IBM are ahead in sales of notebook computers. In the overall desktop market, Compaq has a 16.5% share and IBM has 15%.
