CANADIAN COMPANIES NOT READY FOR YEAR 2000, SAYS SURVEY
By Adnews Staff
A recent survey conducted by PeopleSoft Canada Ltd. finds that preparing the nation's computers for the potentially disasterous results of the coming millenium is the most important technological issue facing Canadian companies. However, the survey also finds that many companies are frittering away the little time remaining, due to a combination of communication gaps and a general fear of risky fixes. The Year 2000 Progress Survey found that, while nine out of ten respondants said they were looking into the problem, 33% said they had "no idea" when their solutions would be implemented. In addition, the survey identified a shortage of trained staff, confusion about the many Y2K products available and the high cost of fixing the problem as the main reasons progress has been slow. Statistics Canada has estimated that Canadian companies will spend $12 billion dollars by the year 2000 to fix the bugs.
