TAIWAN GETS TOUGH ON CIGARETTE ADS
By Adnews Staff
Taiwan has implemented strict regulations on cigarette advertising. Under the new plan, no point-of-purchase materials promoting tobacco products are allowed. In addition, cigarette packages must carry a Chinese-language notice, prominently stating the amount of nicotine and tar contained in the product. It is illegal to sell cigarettes to anyone under the age of 18. To facilitate the ban on sales to minors, tobacco products can no longer be sold through vending machines, mail order, electronic shopping or any other medium in which the age of the purchaser cannot be verified. All smoking is banned in most public places including schools, hospitals, bus and railway stations, airports, restaurants, hotels and public areas of both government and privately-owned buildings.
