TV TOPS WITH AD SPENDERS

Canadian advertising sales rose 5.5% in 1996 to $8.01 billion, with TV leading the way, according to figures released by the Television Bureau of Canada and the Radio Marketing Bureau. TV took $1.98 billion of the total spent on advertising. Daily newspapers came in second with $1.96 billion. Specialty channels saw revenue jump 27%, while revenue for catalogues and direct mail increased 12% to $1.11 billion. Radio advertising revenue rose 3.6% to $797 million, while weekly newspapers rose 3.1% to $597 million. Yellow Pages advertisements jumped 3.2% to $892 million.
