CAJ SPEAKS OUT FOR FREELANCE E-COPYRIGHTS

The Canadian Association of Journalists has made public its support for the protection of freelance writers' electronic copyrights. The association is concerned that some publishers are reprinting freelance work in electronic formats such as CD-ROMs or websites, while only paying for it once. According to the CAJ, freelance journalists are often not even informed that their work will be reproduced electronically, or asked to sign contracts in which they hand over all rights to a publisher. The association wants publications to adhere to the standard practice of negotiating separate contracts with freelancers for second printings or syndications.
