GIRLS JUST FINE AS THEY ARE, SAYS AD
By Adnews Staff
Toronto-based Concerned Children's Advertisers, together with Health Canada, launched an ad yesterday called "We are Girls" which encourages Canadian girls aged 11-14 to look at themselves "with honesty, strength and individuality, rather than fear or self-criticism," as a release puts it. The groups note that a recent study shows that in Canada twice as many teenage girls as boys suffer from self-confidence and image problems. The study also shows that low self-esteem is one of the leading factors linked to substance abuse. The 30-second and 45-second commercial was created by Vickers & Benson Advertising Ltd. CCA is a non-profit group of 21 Canadian companies dedicated to "making children's 'TV time' as meaningful, balanced entertaining and informative as possible."
