ALPHASTAR SIGNS OFF

The direct-to-home satellite TV company that touted itself as being the first to offer the service in Canada, is also the first to be off the air. Tee-Comm Electronics of Milton, Ont. was forced off the air yesterday after there were no acceptable bids to buy the company. The Bank of Montreal forced Tee-Comm into receivership in May. The company's board resigned, Price Waterhouse Associates was appointed the receiver and Tee-Comm's management has been running the company ever since. Tee-Comm's subsidiary, Alphastar Canada, launched its DTH service last March. Its 7,000 subscribers had 35 video channels, 30 audio channels and 10 pay-per-view stations. Advertising for Alphastar was done by The Quarry Group of Kitchener, Ont. PR was done by Goodman Communications of Toronto. Tee-Comm owned part of ExpressVu Inc. of Mississauga, Ont. until it sold its 21% stake in the company last October to launch its own DTH service.
