MONTY NAMED CEO OF THE YEAR

Northern Telecom Ltd. CEO and vice-chairman Jean Monty has been named Outstanding CEO Of The Year for 1997. The award is sponsored by The Caldwell Partners, The Financial Post and the CTV Television Network, and will be presented to Monty in Toronto on Nov. 20. Monty joined Nortel in 1992. Since then, the company saw growth of $12.8 billion(US) in 1996, compared to revenues of $8.4 billion(US) in 1992. Nortel has also transformed from a North American-based telecommunications equipment maker to a global corporation that designs, builds and integrates digital networks for customers in markets of information, communication, entertainment, education and electronic commerce. The CEO Of The Year award was established in 1990. It recognizes the CEO of a private or public Canadian corporation who has made an outstanding contribution to Canada's global competitiveness. Other criteria include the CEO's sense of vision, leadership, innovation and social responsibility.
