TEENS BIG SPENDERS

The purchasing power of U.S. teens is expected to grow to $144 billion(US) by the year 2000, according to New York-based research firm Packaged Facts. Currently, the figure stands at $106 billion annually. Teens influence between $200 and $300 billion in spending each year, on purchases raging from cars to deodorants. Annual income for teens is estimated at $11,000, and up to $80 a week is spent on discretionary items. Of their income, 33% is spent on clothes, 23% on entertainment, 16% on food and 16% on personal care products. Seventy per cent of the teen population works part-time.
