FTC FIRES AT TOBACCO MAKER

The U.S. Federal Trade Commission says R.J. Reynolds Tobacco's Joe Camel mascot promotes cigarettes to children and adolescents. The organization has voted to bring the company to an administrative law judge to to demand that the company stop targeting kids and launch a public education campaign to discourage children from smoking. R.J. Reynolds says the ruling is unfounded and plans to fight the charges. Joe Camel appears in ads and on watches, T-shirts and lighters. The FTC wants to limit it to bars and other places permitting only adults.
