SENATE PASSES TOBACCO BILL
By Adnews Staff
An overwhelming majority of senators voted in favor of the federal government's anti-tobacco legislation, Bill C-71, yesterday. The Senate passed the bill without amendments by a count of 75-1. Created to replace the Tobacco Products Control Act, a previous anti-tobacco law declared unconstitutional by the Supreme Court of Canada, Bill C-71 places heavy restrictions on tobacco advertising. Cigarette makers can only advertise in publications aimed at adults, in direct mailings to adults and in premises such as bars where minors are not allowed. Tobacco advertising is banned on radio, TV billboards, bus kiosks and transit shelters. In-store displays are also prohibited.
