MALE M&MS GET FEMALE FRIEND

M&M's Yellow and Red candy-coated spokescandies, veterans of several TV campaigns, now have a female friend-Green. Green, who first appeared in TV spots airing during January's Superbowl, made her Canadian debut last week. In the spots, Green crosses swords with comedian Dennis Miller, holding her own against Miller's good-natured barbs. She also manages to put the Yellow and Red characters in their place. Andy Alderman, an M&Ms spokesperson, said the company created the new character to give its male spokescandies "some company as well as some competition." Sporting "retro mascaraed lashes, full sensuous lips" and footwear ranging from tennis shoes to high heels to white go-go boots, M&M's touting the new character as smart, self-confident and sexy. Green's TV spots, created by BBDO's New York office, are running across the country with the exception of Quebec. Bates Canada of Toronto handled the media buy in Canada. Harbinger Communications, also of Toronto, handles M&M's Canadian PR. M&Ms are manufactured by Mars of New Jersey and distributed in Canada by Effem Foods of Toronto.
