MICROSOFT TO LAUNCH INTERACTIVE PLAYMATE
By Adnews Staff
U.S.-based Microsoft Inc. unveiled a system this week designed to make learning more fun for young children. Called the ActiMates early learning system, the educational tool encompasses a variety of products that run on a personal computer or VCR. The three main components are: a talking moving, interactive Barney doll; a TV pack that includes a radio transmitter and specially-encoded videotapes; and a PC pack with a radio transmitter and CD-ROM game. The goal of the system is to have children learn while they play with the doll. The wireless, plush Barney has sensors in his eyes, feet and hands, allowing him to respond to a child's touch. He also has a 2,000-word vocabulary to talk a child through a variety of learning activities. The toy is also designed to interact with the software and videos through the radio transmitters. As he watches a videotape or software program, Barney will comment on what's happening on-screen. Designed for children aged two to five, ActiMates will be available in September.
