Toys R Us readies Barbie promotion

Toronto-based retailer Toys R Us Canada has begun a promotion in association with toy company Mattel in support of the 60th anniversary of the Barbie brand. The effort will consist of a special event at each of the chain’s 82 stores nationally on March 9. The events will include product trials, cookie decorating and free posters. The company will also host seven in-store appearances by Canadian women intended to be role models for children. Each of these events will include activities related to that role model’s career. Participants will include Toys R Us Canada president Melanie Teed-Murch, figure skater Tessa Virtue, Louise Green of Big Fit Girl, Faith Dickinson of Cuddles for Cancer, Lauren and Ashley Voisin of Robots Are Fun, chef Connie Desousa, fashion designer Melissa Davis, and Mary and Cristina of Bakers with a Cause.

“As a brand that inspires the limitless potential in girls, Barbie is thrilled to be celebrating its 60th anniversary with Toys R Us Canada and recognizing role models across the country who empower and remind girls that ‘You Can Be Anything,'" said Krista Berger, global senior director of marketing for Barbie. “The brand has been inspiring girls since 1959 by allowing them to play out different roles and careers with iconic Barbie dolls.”
