Sobey Art Foundation increases annual art prizes

The Sobey Art Foundation of Stellarton, NS has increased its support for the annual Sobey Art Award. As of 2018, the annual grand prize will be increased from $50,000 to $100,000. The prizes for reaching the short list of four will be increased from $10,000 to $25,000, while the prizes for reaching the long list of 20 will be increased from $1,000 to $2,000. In addition, the foundation will create three international residencies for artists drawn from the annual long list. The Sobey Art Award recognizes Canadian artists under the age of 40.
"On behalf of the Sobey Art Foundation, we are very pleased to accept this gift of the Donald R Sobey Foundation to the benefit of all of the artists supported by our annual programming," said Rob Sobey, chair of the foundation. "This support will help broaden a re-investment by our art foundation to put more money directly into the careers of Canadian artists. We hope to be able to create more significant and tangible international opportunities for our long-listed artists."
