Canadian Produce Marketing Association conducts Chef for a Day event

The Ottawa-based Canadian Produce Marketing Association has begun a national initiative called "Chef for a Day" intended to encourage healthy eating habits and food skills development among children. On Nov. 21, students in 30 classrooms will participate in an educational event intended to teach them how to make a healthy lunch. The events will focus on health, food safety and taste. Participating teachers are encouraged to enlist local chefs, dietitians or parents to assist. The initiative also includes media relations activities.

"We know that the development of proper food skills is an essential foundation for healthy eating, and that the best way to learn is with a hands-on experience," said Ron Lemaire, president of the association. "We're hoping this event can provide awareness at the community level as to the benefits of teaching children to cook and sending them to school with more nutritious lunches."
