Artist conducts Speaking Fruit initiative

A Toronto artist named Farrah Miranda has begun a communications initiative called "Speaking Fruit" intended to raise awareness of the work done by migrant farmworkers in southern Ontario. The effort takes the shape of a mobile fruit stand that will visit a series of locations between September and December. The vehicle will provide information about protecting the rights of migrant farmworkers in the form of messages from participating workers. The messages consist of answers to the question, "If the fruits you grow and pick could speak from dinner tables, refrigerators and grocery aisles, what would you want them to say?" The produce-themed vehicle also hosts a virtual reality presentation and mock produce packaging that encourages consumers to respond to farmworkers via social media.
