Americans are mainly using the Internet for information, communication and research, according to a study by Market Facts of Arlington Heights, Illinois. Eighty-two per cent of respondents familiar with the Internet said they go on-line primarily to gather news and information. Just over 80% use e-mail and 69.1% log on to conduct research. Just over 27% of respondents said that doing research and sending e-mail is what they spend the most time on. Almost 40% of those who've been on-line at least once in the past six months said they participate in bulletin boards, while 25.3% use the Internet for chat sessions, 23.8% use it for games and 14.9% use on-line shopping applications. The survey was conducted for Advertising Age magazine from Sept. 6 to 11 on randomly selected people age 18 and older.
