CIRCULATION OF DAILIES DECLINES AGAIN
By Adnews Staff
For the sixth consecutive year, the Canadian Newspaper Association has reported a drop in sales of daily newspapers. Canadian dailies' sales declined from 5.3 million copies a day in 1995 to almost 5.2 million daily copies this year. Continuing the trend of recent years, tabloid dailies gained ground on broadsheets, now accounting for more than one out of four newspapers sold in Canada. Large dailies reporting an increase in circulation include The Toronto Sun, which rose 1%, and the Winnipeg Free Press, which increased O.8%. Large dailies faring poorly in terms of number of papers sold include The Spectator of Hamilton, Ont., which lost 8%, La Presse of Montreal, which saw sales fall 6.8%, and The Ottawa Citizen, which was down 6.8%.
