BOMBARDIER UNVEILS ELECTRIC CAR

Bombardier Inc. of Montreal has begun producing electric vehicles for market in the southern U.S. Equipped with lead batteries, the new product, known as the Neighborhood Electric Vehicle (NEV), can be recharged using a standard 110-volt outlet. Designed for short-distance travels, the NEV has a range of about 50 kilometres and a maximum speed of 40km/h. The vehicle is being introduced in Arizona and will later be rolled out to California and Florida. A Bombardier press release says the southern U.S. market is ideal, because of the climate and lifestyle. The company believes the NEV will capture the attention of golfers and has designed a special golf option package. The vehicle will be promoted through print, radio and TV ads in Arizona near the end of November. Modda of Phoenix created the ads. Motorized consumer product development vice-president Marcel Boutin told Adnews the company has had calls from interested parties in Quebec and B.C. But he said he couldn't forecast when the NEV might come to Canada, adding that it took time to train dealers to service the electric vehicles.
